Talking Central Florida – May 27, 2026
Tune in on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. on Central Florida Public Media (90.7 FM Orlando and 89.5 FM Ocala).
Florida lawmakers are preparing to vote on final approval of a state budget deal before it goes to Governor DeSantis for his signature. The governor has previewed that he is likely to use his line-item veto pen.
Meanwhile, legislators will need to be back in Tallahassee on Monday after the governor called a special legislative session to tackle his plan to eliminate property taxes on most homesteaded properties in the state.
DeSantis is calling for an amendment to go before voters in November raising the state’s homestead exemption from $50,000 to $250,000 and requiring the legislature to eventually increase the exemption to $500,000.
Meghan Bowman from WUSF’s state government reporting project, Your Florida, joins Talking Central Florida to discuss the budget and property taxes.
